Overview

Beijing Impression Haymarket offers an authentic gateway into Northern Chinese cuisine right in the heart of Sydney’s Haymarket precinct. Nestled on the third level of Market City, this restaurant masterfully blends tradition with a modern dining atmosphere, making it an inviting spot for both casual diners and those seeking a cultural culinary experience.

The centerpiece of the menu is undoubtedly the Peking duck, a dish that draws consistent praise from patrons and food critics alike. Carved tableside, the duck showcases the perfect balance of crispy skin and tender, flavorful meat. The carving itself adds an engaging element, turning your meal into a mini performance. While the duck pancakes come with a modest amount of accompaniments like pickled vegetables and spring onions, the attentive staff are happy to provide extra, ensuring every bite hits the right notes.

Beyond the iconic duck, the restaurant’s diverse offerings celebrate a variety of northern Chinese flavors. Dishes such as the Double Flavors Prawns—highlighted by contrasting profiles of Kung Pao heat and tangy Lemon Custard—and the robustly seasoned Lamb Cumin cater to those craving rich, spicy layers. The ox tail impresses with deep, comforting flavors, while the Red Cooked Pork Belly paired with Chinese yam adds a touch of traditional homestyle comfort.

The dining space itself complements the culinary experience with tasteful décor and a welcoming ambiance, ideal for intimate dinners or small group celebrations. This balance of atmosphere and authentic fare appeals not only to lovers of Chinese food but also to adventurous eaters keen to explore regional dishes beyond the usual.

Service here is marked by warmth and attentiveness, with staff accommodating special requests and making guests feel at home. Weekend dining includes a surcharge, so many recommend visiting on weekdays to enjoy the full experience without the extra cost.

In summary, Beijing Impression Haymarket stands out as a reliable destination for those seeking genuine northern Chinese flavors in Sydney. Its specialty Peking duck provides both flavor and theater, while the well-curated menu and inviting setting make it a worthwhile stop for locals and visitors alike.

If you come here and don’t get the duck as part of your meal, you kinda miss out on their specialty. They have someone carve it up right next to you so it comes with a little ‘show’ but because sometimes everyone else is doing it, you do have to wait a bit for your turn. The other dishes were honestly okay with no real wow factor but they were fine. They do need to provide a bit more filling for the duck pancakes as you will find yourself with limited amount of pickled vegetables, spring onion etc but you can ask for more thankfully. The place is also well decorated and looks pretty cool to be in and also take note there is also a weekend surcharge so I recommended coming for a weekday dinner.

Nice northern Chinese food. Roast duck is the specialty here, so it is a must order. It is freshly roasted and crispy - the skin itself is not overly sweet. Ox tail was very flavourful. Lamb cumin was as expected. Prawns two style was wasabi mayo and sweet and sour. I would come again especially for the duck.

Amazing Peking duck. My second recommendation is the double flavor shrimp. I really like the refreshing tea (pear juice, I think) and the tofu dessert. I had a group seating for just our friends, another plus

Wonderful decor with elaborated woodwork, birdcages, mandarin trees and two enormous branches encased in glass. Service was prompt and efficient. Their Peking duck took me back to Beijing when I visited years ago. The skins had the same wafer crisp texture which melts in your mouth. There are only two restaurants in Sydney I visited can achieve that. The meat was succulent and moist, it was very authentic. Other dishes were ok. Some good and some bad. Good ones were Mustard Sauced Duck Web, Soy Sauce Pig Hocks and Fried Rice with Meat & Vegetables. The most unimpressive dish was Imitation Crab Flavour Egg. The menu photo was deceiving for there was no match to the dish was served apart from that fancy crab shaped bowl. That dish is supposed to cook the egg whites until they fluff up into clouds that look like crab meat. What we got was just a bowl of egg drop soup. One standout dish was the dessert Flaming Sticky Rice Cake as Honeycomb Briquette. It comprised of fried black rice soaked in fruit and brandy then lit on fire at your table for the theatrical presentation.
